This year marks the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. 500 years ago Luther nailed 95 reasons that grace could not be bought or earned to the door of his church begging for a debate. That ignited a firestorm that led to the restoration of the Bible to the hearts and minds of God’s people. Up to that time, the religious climate in church resembled the religious landscape in America today- many ideas about God and salvation that all seemed to lead away from Christ.
How does one make sense out of the plethora of religious ideas? What emerged from Luther and his friends were three main thoughts:
- Scripture Alone
- Grace Alone
- Faith Alone.
These three words became the three lights that led people out of spiritual darkness. The Lutheran church still champions all three today.
To keep the fires of renewal burning, Holy Word will be having a three part sermon series on those three words. The series begins Sunday, October 22, and ends Sunday, November 5. You won’t want to miss any of these sermons. If you know anyone who is spiritually confused, promise to buy them breakfast or lunch and drag them along to church. They will thank you later.
