Holy Word Lutheran Church
Holy Word held its first church service on February 23, 1969 at 3:30pm at Canterbury Chapel of the Episcopal Student Union near the University of Texas at Austin campus. After several suggestions were made for the church’s official name, Holy Word was chosen on October 5, 1969. After buying a 5.3 acre tract at 10601 Bluff Bend Drive in September of 1970, the church members purchased a pre-owned portable building, and converted it into a worship area, which was dedicated on June 20, 1971.
Ground was broken for the construction of a new permanent worship facility on September 2, 1973, and was dedicated on February 24, 1974. That first sanctuary served the congregation for nearly thirty years before it became evident that more room was needed for worship. March 1999 saw groundbreaking for a new sanctuary in which we worship today. The beautiful worship facility was dedicated in June of 2002. Our prayer is that we may continue to be a church that is a beacon with the Gospel that shines out for North Austin for many more years to come.
Holy Word Christian Academy and Hannah’s World
Christian education was close to the heart of the members of Holy Word and this led them to establish a Lutheran elementary school. In the fall of 1974, they began classes with a total of 15 children, representing all grades except third. In the fall of 1980, the congregation resolved to undertake the construction of a fellowship/school facility. Groundbreaking was on January 11, 1981 and the project was completed in only a few months, with the dedication service on September 6, 1981.
Holy Word Christian Academy closed in 2016 and transferred its educational efforts to Pflugerville and Liberty Hill. A Mother’s Day Out program was started in a few of the empty classrooms in June of 2016. Soon the interest and need for quality Christian child care became evident. After a year of renovation and preparation, Hannah’s World opened its doors on August 8, 2018. God continues to shower blessings upon this current ministry.
Our plan is to grow our center and school to offer infant to elementary school education and God willing even beyond so that we can be a light of the gospel shining out for North Austin and its families for many years to come.
